Summary of the Story:
A rich banker made a strange bet with a young lawyer. The banker said that being in prison for life was worse than death. But the lawyer believed that any kind of life is better than death. So, the banker bet that the lawyer could not stay in complete isolation for 15 years. If the lawyer stayed, he would win two million rubles.
The young man agreed. He lived alone in a small room for 15 years. During this time, he read many books and studied everything – science, history, literature, philosophy, and religion. He never saw or talked to anyone.
Years passed, and the banker lost most of his money due to bad business and gambling. As the 15 years were coming to an end, the banker became scared. He thought he would be ruined if he had to pay the money. So, one night he went to the prisoner’s room to kill him quietly.
But inside, he found the lawyer asleep and looking very thin and weak. On the table, the lawyer had written a note. In the note, he said that he now hated money and worldly things. He had read and learned so much that he realized everything in life is temporary and meaningless. So, he no longer wanted the money. He said he would leave the room five minutes before the 15 years ended to lose the bet on purpose.
The banker read the letter, felt ashamed, and left silently. The next day, the prisoner left the room quietly and disappeared. The banker locked the note in his safe to keep it secret.
This story shows how money and pride can make people do dangerous things. The lawyer became wise through reading and learning, and gave up all his desires.
